🚀 Hyderabad is Expanding Again: 27 Municipalities to be Merged into GHMC

The Telangana Government has taken a landmark decision that could reshape Hyderabad’s urban future for the next two decades. A total of 27 fast-growing municipalities around the ORR are set to be merged into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) — a move that significantly expands the city’s administrative, economic, and developmental footprint.

With this, Hyderabad is gearing up for its biggest civic transformation since 2007, when several municipalities and gram panchayats were merged to form the present-day GHMC.

🏙️ What Does This Merger Mean?

✔ GHMC to become one of India’s largest civic bodies

The corporation’s limits are expected to grow from ~650 sq. km to nearly 1,800–2,000 sq. km, making it one of the largest metropolitan governance zones in the country.

✔ ORR-Shivaru towns officially become “Greater Hyderabad”

Manikonda, Narsingi, Kompally, Tellapur, Boduppal, Ghatkesar, Shamshabad and 20+ surrounding towns—
all of which have already become urban extensions in practice—
will now gain official GHMC status.

✔ A unified development ecosystem

Urban planning, roads, sanitation, water supply, and civic services will now be standardized.
No more mismatched development levels between “GHMC vs Municipality”; the entire zone functions as One Hyderabad, One Governance System.

📈 Why This Matters for Hyderabad’s Future

1️⃣ Infrastructure Vision 2035 gets a major boost

A single metropolitan authority can plan and execute:

  • road grids

  • stormwater systems

  • zonal development

  • mobility corridors

  • integrated town planning

This avoids the fragmented decision-making that earlier slowed down the ORR belt.

2️⃣ Real estate growth trajectory accelerates

With GHMC regulations coming into effect, the ORR belt becomes more attractive for:

  • investors

  • developers

  • homebuyers

  • commercial & logistics players

Property values, especially in western, north-western, and south-eastern clusters, may see upward movement over the next few years.

3️⃣ Better civic services & accountability

Waste management, property tax systems, construction approvals, and service delivery—
all get upgraded to established GHMC standards.

⚠️ However, the expansion comes with challenges

  • GHMC’s administrative load will triple overnight.

  • Resource allocation must be balanced to avoid existing GHMC zones being stretched thin.

  • Some municipalities with lower tax brackets may see revised tax structures under GHMC rules.

Hyderabad’s civic future will depend heavily on how effectively this massive governance expansion is executed.

🌆 The Bigger Picture

This merger marks the beginning of Hyderabad 2.0 — a metropolitan model built to compete with Bengaluru, Mumbai, and global tier-1 cities.
The next 3–5 years will be crucial as policies, services, and planning are unified.

Hyderabad is not just growing…
It is transforming into a true mega-city.

💬 What do you think?

Is this expansion the right step towards planned growth?
Or will GHMC become too large to manage efficiently?
